Development Updates on Shield Machine Cutter Tools from Luoyang Jiujiu Company

China began developing tunnel boring machines in the early 1960s and conducted extensive exploratory experiments on roller cutter materials. However, at that time, there were no specialized manufacturers of roller cutters, and research institutions lacked sufficient funding to support these experimental efforts. As a result, the development of roller cutters fell short of expectations, though some exploration was carried out on scraper tools for TBM operations in weak geological conditions. By the mid-1990s, the Ministry of Railways initiated a feasibility study for adopting the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) approach in the Qinling Tunnel project of the Xi'kang Railway. Since the roller cutter segments are the primary rock-breaking components of TBMs, their high consumption significantly increased construction costs and delayed project timelines. Moreover, imported cutter segments were not only expensive but also suffered from lengthy delivery times. In response, the Ministry of Railways established a dedicated task force in the late 1990s to tackle the challenge of domestically producing disc-type roller cutters for full-face tunneling machines.

Beijing Metro Line 10 Phase II: First Section of Tunnel Boring Machine Passage Fully Connected

Good news has arrived from the construction site of Section 17, Phase II of Beijing Subway Line 10, managed by Beijing Zhuzong Municipal Engineering Company—the first tunnel segment for the entire second phase of Line 10 has been successfully completed. As the Tiantun No. 7 tunnel boring machine (TBM) began operation, its cutterhead broke through the soil and gradually entered the pre-installed tunnel portal ring, seemingly smiling with joy as it marked this significant milestone. This breakthrough also signifies the smooth completion of the right-line tunnel section between Huoqiying Station and the terminal point for this particular section. The right-line tunnel section in this segment measures 940.187 meters, while the left-line stretches 963.289 meters, totaling 1,903.476 meters in combined length. The TBM was launched on February 22, 2010, from the right-line starting point near Bagou Village. During its journey, it safely navigated under several critical infrastructure elements, including the northbound track of Landing Factory North Road, the Kunyu River, and the southbound track of Landing Factory North Road. Additionally, it passed closely alongside one to two-story buildings belonging to the Haidian Branch Office of the Beijing Municipal Transportation Bureau, as well as beneath the west-side bridge piers of the Wanquan River Interchange overpass—each posing unique challenges. Throughout the process, the TBM encountered an intricate network of underground utilities, including 41 separate pipelines such as telecommunications cables, power lines, water supply and drainage systems, and gas pipes. Notably, five of these were rainwater and sewage pipelines, each exceeding 1 meter in diameter.

China's domestically developed tunnel-boring equipment has achieved a localization rate of 60 percent.

The prototype slurry balance tunneling machine "Jin Yue," developed and built by five organizations including Shanghai Urban Construction Tunneling Co., Ltd., boasts full independent intellectual property rights and a diameter of 11.22 meters. It was successfully deployed in the Dapu Road twin-tunnel project—a key infrastructure supporting the Shanghai World Expo—and completed the 1,472-meter-long tunneling task flawlessly. During construction, the "Jin Yue" slurry balance shield machine operated smoothly, showcasing the exceptional maneuverability and precision of domestically produced shield equipment, especially when it came to protecting nearby structures and navigating ultra-small-radius tunneling sections.
